Popular Workplace Messaging System Possibly Breached

By Marcos Colon

HipChat, a popular group messaging system used by businesses, may have experienced a data breach.

The company reset user passwords following what it called a security incident that could have exposed the names, email addresses and encrypted password information of its users, according to a blog post published Monday.

HipChat’s Security Intelligence Team detected the incident over the weekend, which involved a flaw in a “third-party library used by HipChat.com.” While an investigation takes place, HipChat believes the incident may have resulted in unauthorized access to its content, including chat room data such as room names and topics, but no impact to financial information.

“We are confident we have isolated the affected systems and closed any unauthorized access,” the company wrote.
