The Russian intelligence service said it has stopped a planned cyberattack on that nation's banks that was slated to launch on December 5.
CNNMoney reported that the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) issued a statement stating unnamed foreign intelligence services were behind the attack and that it was scheduled to use Ukranian-owned servers located in the Netherlands. The servers are owned by BlazingFast, whose executives denied any knowledge of the impending cyberassault.
BlazingFast rents out service space and said an investigation did not turn up any evidence of an attack.
CNNMoney also reported the FSB said the bank attack would be accompanied by a campaign of fake news stories and social media messages aimed at undermining the world's confidence in the Russian banking system.
Russian banks are frequently target with several being hit with a DDoS attack in November.
