Stolen laptop contains transportation department worker info

A home burglar stole a laptop containing the personal information of 1,400 current and former employees of the King County Transportation Department in Washington.

What type of personal information? Names, addresses and Social Security numbers.

Details: The laptop - belonging to a human resources employee who regularly brings the laptop from one job site to another - was password protected, but the data was not encrypted. The victims were part of the department's Roads, Airport and Fleet divisions.

What was the response? The Transportation Department notified victims Oct. 3, after learning of the incident two days earlier. The county is providing one year of free credit monitoring. The county is working to develop a plan that would better protect workers' privacy.
