Trend Micro achieves security industry’s first spyware certification

Trend Micro has become the first company to have its products achieve the Checkmark Spyware certification through West Coast Labs.

The anti-virus company said two of its products, Trend Micro PC-cillin and Trend Micro OfficeScan, achieved the spyware certification after rigorous testing at West Coast Labs.

"The Checkmark Spyware certification test system is based on the kinds of real threats that users are bombarded with - if a product can live up to our high standards for detection, it will do well in a 'real- world' implementation," said Jon Stearn, CTO for West Coast Labs. "Trend Micro's achievement of the Checkmark Spyware certification shows the company's commitment to providing excellent anti-spyware products."

For a company to be certified, products must be able to detect remote access Trojans, key loggers, password and cookie stealers plus other assorted malware in the West Coast Labs Spyware test suite without causing false positive test results.

"Spyware and other kinds of threats have become as much of a concern to customers as viruses, worms, and Trojans were a couple years ago," said Joe Hartmann, Director of Antivirus Research at Trend Micro. "Achieving Checkmark certification in the spyware category shows how Trend Micro lives up to high industry standards and continues to deliver world-class solutions for the latest security concerns."
