Cabarrus Co., N.C. loses laptop with patient info

Cabarrus County, N.C., residents have been notified that their personal information could be at risk after an emergency medical services laptop was lost.

What types of personal information?
The laptop contained names, addresses, phone numbers and Social Security numbers of 28,000 people who had received care by the county EMS over the past four years.

What was the response? County officials notified all affected residents by mail.

The county has also hired a call center to field calls from affected personnel, and offered a $500 reward for the safe return of the laptop.

Details: The laptop was left on an ambulance’s back bumper on Oct. 28.

The lost laptop is a silver Panasonic Toughbook 18 tablet PC version.

The county paid nearly $16,700 to print and send letters to affected people.

The laptop also contained medical information of 58 people who received treatment from EMS Oct. 13 – 28.
