How to use cybersecurity to accelerate growth

Cybersecurity often – and rightly – has been viewed as a point of friction and a cost center, but more recently organizations are using it to accelerate growth.

When considered early on – in everything from design and development through planning and execution – security can help companies lower risk and get applications and services up safely and more quickly, while lowering risk, according to a trio of experts on the Sept. 16 Re-envisioning Cybersecurity as a Growth Accelerator panel, led by SC Media Executive Editor Teri Robinson at RiskSec DIGITAL 2020.

Amazon Web Services Principal Security Architect for Global Accounts Merritt Baer, IBM Security Deputy CISO Beth Dunphy and Kraken Digital Asset Exchange CSO Nick Percoco draw from their diverse experiences to flesh out how the relationship between security and DevOps can impact an organization’s ability to see cybersecurity as an accelerator.

Baer provides technical cloud security guidance to complex, regulated organizations like the Fortune 200, advising the leadership of AWS’ largest customers on security as a bottom-line proposition.

Dunphy taps her 25 years in infosec overseeing IBM Security business unit’s day-to-day risk management, cybersecurity, and compliance for one of the world’s largest security product and service providers with a presence in more than 60 countries amid emerging global privacy regulatory frameworks.

Rounding out the group, Percoco co-founded the “I am The Cavalry” movement, a highly regarded grassroots hacker organization that is focused on issues where computer security intersect public safety and human life, and founded SpiderLabs, the ethical hacking test lab that contributed to Trustwave’s growth.

The discussion will lend insight into the cultural changes required to turn cybersecurity into a growth accelerator and how the unique work situation brought about by the pandemic offers an opportunity to make those shifts more quickly.
