Kenyan authorities worried over rise in cybercrime

Cybercrime cases are rising steadily in Kenya, according to EdwinNyaseda, the Nairobi police commissioner.

Quoted in The Nation newspaper, Nyaseda said that Kenya banks had loss millions of shillings to computer fraudsters.

Although some of the frauds had been reported in the press, Nyaseda told delegates at the Interpol African Working Party on Information Technology Crime at Lenana Mount hotel, Nairobi, that many had gone unreported.

The attacks on Kenya's banking sector, he said, have been devastating, adding that the cybercrime proved the need for criminal legislation to expressly prohibit computer fraud.

Nyaseda added that there is also a need to improve international
co-operation between countries to help in tracing and apprehending
Internet criminals.
