CCTV is more than just a technological older brother that gets on your nerves. Despite claims of a surveillance society (Editorial, SC June), we must not forget its valuable work in protecting key business assets.

With the business crime index reporting a 20 per cent increase incrime-related insurance claims in 2006, customer safety is a chiefconcern for retailers. The onus is on businesses to make intelligent useof CCTV to provide a secure and safe environment.

Most businesses have basic systems in place, but they only tacklethreats retrospectively and do not provide enough intelligentsurveillance. Advanced, unobtrusive methods, combined with businessrules, can predict and even prevent criminal activity whilesignificantly reducing loss. CCTV should be hailed as sorely neededbackup against criminal bullies in the business playground.
