The Naval War College in Newport, R.I. was still without e-mail communications this week after a November cyberattack that officials suspect was conducted by Chinese hackers.
Initially detected by the Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command on Nov. 16, the attack forced the school to shut down its network for a forensics investigation.
The school's website has been unavailable for weeks, and students have been forced to use personal e-mail to communicate with the outside world.
The Naval War College is responsible for advancing strategies for cyber warfare.
One unnamed official told the Washington Post: "The Naval War College is where the Navy's Strategic Studies Group is planning and practicing cyberwar techniques, and now they don't even have e-mail access."
According to announcement in class by retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Richard Goetze, the attack was the work of Chinese hackers, according to press reports. The Post reported last week that U.S. officials have connected the intrusion with a series of Chinese computer attacks against defense and military systems in the U.S. code-named "Titan Rain."
