A judge in California slapped $319,000 in damages on Yovan Garcia, a former security officer convicted of entering the payroll records of his former employer to change his hours and later stealing data from the company's servers that he later used to develop a rival company.
Security Specialists spotted discrepancies in Garcia's records nearly three years ago – it appeared he had worked 12-hour days when he'd only worked eight hours daily. "As a result, defendant Garcia was paid thousands of dollars more in overtime wages than he was really owed," the BBC reported Judge Michael Fitzgerald of the Central District Court of California as saying.
Garcia also was accused of causing “debilitating” defacement of the company's website by deleting or corrupting backup files.
