Google Bolsters Gmail Security to Combat Phishing Attacks

By Marcos Colon

Google has added new security features to further protect Gmail users from phishing and spam messages, as well as data loss.

While not specifically stated, the new features may in be response to the Google Docs phishing attack that impacted up to one million Gmail users in May.

One of the new features includes leveraging machine learning to block spam messages and detect phishing messages. Machine learning has resulted in a 99% accuracy rate in spam detection for Gmail, according to a blog post by Sri Somanchi, a Gmail product manager.

Other features include click-time warnings for malicious links, unintended external reply warnings, and correlating spam signals with attachment and sender heuristics to predict what messages may be accompanied with new and unseen malware.

“While the bad guys never rest, neither do we,” Somanchi wrote.
