Ames, Iowa, parking ticket payment system breached

For 4,600 Ames, Iowa, residents, forgetting to put a quarter into a parking meter may end up costing more than the price of their parking fine.

Ames reported on Friday a data breach may have exposed information on the 4,600 people who used the city’s online ticket payment system between Aug. 10 to Nov. 19, 2018. The information compromised may include payment card information, names, addresses and email addresses.

The city learned of the problem on Nov. 19 and immediately took down the ticket paying system, eventually replacing a server that contained the data. It also notified Click2Gov, a third-party vendor that processes the online payments.

The city has not determined how the breach occurred.
