Telus snaps up forensics firm

Canadian telecommunications giant Telus is bolstering its security offering with the acquisition of digital security and forensics company Digital Wyzdom.

Digital Wyzdom is a Toronto-based company specialising in forensic investigations and security assessments. The company, which already numbered Telus among its clients, has also worked for retail chains and mining firms in Canada.

Last year, Digital Wyzdom assisted in the investigation of a widespread hack targeting seven Canadian legal firms. CEO Daniel Tobok identified attacks from Chinese IP addresses, which he said were a direct attempt to target information about the proposed deal between Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan and Australian mining firm BHP.

Under the Telus deal (financial details of which were not disclosed), Tobok becomes director of TELUS Security Solutions. The merged firm will provide services including quick cyber mishap response, forensic analysis and network security investigations.

Telus and Digital Wyzdom already have close ties. Gene McLean, Digital Wyzdom's managing director, used to be the chief security officer at Telus.
