Nine-year sentence for law firm’s malicious insider

A malicious insider was handed a nine-year prison sentence and a $1.7 million fine for hacking into the computer system of his former employer, according to MoreLaw.

Anastasio N. Laoutaris, 41, of Spring, Texas, had been an IT engineer for the Dallas-based law firm of Locke Lord from 2006 to 2011. Four months after his employment ended, he hacked into the global company's network without permission and, according to court documents, deleted or disabled hundreds of user accounts, desktop and laptop accounts, and user email accounts.

He was convicted in October of two counts of intentionally accessing a computer network without authorization and intentionally issuing commands and codes that damaged the network.

The maximum statutory penalty he could have received is 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine on each count.
