Ohio students arrested for unauthorized snow day announcement on high school website

Two students at an Ohio high school were arrested last week and accused of illegally accessing their school district website to announce an unauthorized snow day.

Officials at Edgewood High School in Trenton had planned for a one-hour delay on Feb. 5, but found that the district website was notifying students and parents of a day off due to inclement weather.

The students, 16 and 17 years old and unnamed in press reports, face expulsion, according to an Associated Press report.

The 16-year-old student was charged in juvenile court with delinquency by unauthorized use of a computer and by reason of records tampering, according to the AP report. The 17-year-old was charged with delinquency by reason complicity to those crimes.

Authorities believe the students did not hack into the district’s website, but gained access by a password, according to press reports.

The girls even duped local media, which reported that district officials had called for a day off.

The two students later joined in message board bashing of district officials – whom they accused of not being able to make a prompt decision about the day off - according to press reports.
