Summary

The Panda GateDefender Integra 300 comes as a complete package UTM with many good features, including a firewall, VPN, IPS, malware protection at the gateway using heuristics, spam and phishing protection at the gateway, and a web content filter.

We found that while this product certainly has the required feature set for a UTM, the standard practice in this type of product is to add many additional features. In service to that, additional features add value to this product and these features are made somewhat richer through the GateDefender’s Panda pedigree.

This product is fairly easy to use. The appliance is placed into the network and can either function as a router or transparently monitor traffic. Once the device is connected, configuration is done almost completely manually. There is no setup wizard for this device, so we had to completely configure it on our own. We found the web-based GUI simple and intuitive to navigate, but configuring the device was a little tricky at first.

Once configured, this product worked quite well throughout our tests. We found policies were simple to configure and most could be set by just simply clicking a button or checking a box. However, there is no integration with Active Directory, so groups for filtering policies must be created by IP.

Documentation consists of an installation guide and a user guide. The installation guide clearly lays out deployment options and gives clear instructions on initial configuration. It also includes small diagrams of illustration topologies. The user guide is well organized and includes a fair amount of detail, but there are few illustrations.

Panda offers 24/7 phone support, as well as a support center on the website that includes a knowledge base and FAQs.

At a price of just under $4,000 for the fully loaded unit, and about $37 per node from 101-1000 nodes, this product can become pricey in a hurry, depending on the environment. We find this product to be of average value for the money for its feature set and difficult manageability.
