This integrated application provides enterprises with a virus scanner and manager in one package. It is a key component of a comprehensive, long-established range of applications, including an acclaimed email server, and servers for web mail, IM and collaboration.
While GMS Anti-Virus integrates tightly with these offerings, it will protect any mail server. Further, GMS security options come in the form of GMS Anti-Spam and the GMS Firewall that deploys on a gateway server to protect internal corporate networks.
The first thing to note is that GMS Anti-Virus scores highly in terms of the range of platforms it supports, with versions designed to run on Windows, several popular varieties of Unix, and also on Linux. The anti-virus engine, which Gordano claims can successfully block viruses before they enter a company’s network, allows administrators to configure for virus definition files to be automatically downloaded as often as every 15 minutes.
All the components of GMS Anti-Virus were shipped out on a single CD, from which all the components that make up the GMS Anti-Virus package will load by default. It is worth noting that this disk came with very little documentation: just a single sheet of installation notes for the firm’s entire boundary protection range. However, we have been impressed by the ease of installation and use which GMS has always brought to its products in the past and were not disappointed this time.
The startup application on the disk leads to a well-designed set-up wizard, from which we chose to install these GMS products: Mail, Comm, Anti-Spam, Anti-Spam Update Service, Anti-Virus, WebMail, Collaboration, IM, WebOrganizer and Archiver.
Set-up was simplicity itself, and first involved choosing how users would be authenticated. A good range of options is included via Gordano’s proprietary database, which we selected, and also via a Windows NT database or an optional external data source which could be an SQL, LDAP or Active Directory server.
After this simple process, the suite installed in a few minutes. From here, we went to update the AV signatures; a simple matter of going to the update option in the Administration view and selecting them. They arrived and were installed in a matter of minutes.
