MailMarshal

NetIQ has a long and successful name in email security, so it is no surprise to see it dominating this group test with MailMarshal.

The product protects against spam and email viruses as well as enforcing your company-wide Acceptable Use Policy.

We installed the server on a standard Windows XP Pro machine and were pleased to see that it double-checked that we wanted to use our easy password of "password." During installation, the program installs MSDE 2000, as MailMarshall is built on SQL.

MailMarshal is based on MS's Management Console, which lends it immediate familiarity.

To configure the software, we first had to specify relevant domain names, IP and DNS addresses online through NetIQ's wizard.

Having done this we were able to access the software locally in order to configure it in line with our testing requirements.

The management console makes it extremely easy to establish myriad rules and settings essential if you are to maintain a successful and safe email policy. User groups can also be imported from Active Directory or Exchange.

A handful of example email signatures are also included. It meant that with very little hassle we had an effective and professional-looking email content system running in next to no time. It's also really worth delving a bit deeper into MailMarshal.

Overall, the spam filtering function itself is impressive. The software stood up extremely well in our tests, with only a very small amount of junk getting through. Critical false-positives were non-existent.

MailMarshal can also be integrated with several third-party anti-virus solutions, to complete a full security package.

For a Windows environment, NetIQ has delivered an excellent proposition with MailMarshal. Version 6.0 includes the new ability to separate spam into classifications, a web-based management console and improved integration with Active Directory.
