Novell Netware 6.5

You might find it strange to see Novell Netware (essentially a network operating system) included in a group test of two-factor authentication products. But we are discussing secure access to information and services from both local and remote access points. We are also discussing effectively managing user profiles and administering security policies accordingly.

From this perspective, Novell Netware 6.5 looks quite pertinent.

Also, many available products are focused on a Microsoft Windows environment, although there are of course alternatives, especially within the open source world. Novell have appreciated this fact and included integration functionality with My SQL, the Apache web server, Tomcat application server and PHP, ensuring that a wide range of open source applications can run on Netware.

Consider further the work that Novell have put into the Novell Virtual Office, including iFolder and iPrint in order to enable file access and print facilities from any location via the internet. Muse over the supplied directory services and controlled file access. Think about the implications of the Novell Certificate Server and the possibilities around creating an in-house certificate authority. Think about Secure Login and single sign-on functionality. Explore the Novell Modular Authentication Service and support for ActivCard, Entrust, Vasco and others. Get the picture? Novell may not be the first brand you think of if you are looking for a two-factor authentication plug and play product for your existing infrastructure.

However, if you are in the position of creating a new network or wish to consider all the options, Novell should be on your list. You may be surprised at the breadth of functionality it offers.

Those that follow an open source philosophy will be encouraged by Novell's commitment in this area, bolstered by the recent association with Suse Linux. The evaluation versions of the software and associated tools supplied for review, leave one in no doubt that Novell Netware is alive and well, and providing some very interesting functionality for secure computing in the modern world.
