Sentivist Real Time Threat Protection System

NFR is one of the pioneersin intrusion detection andprevention, and itspedigree shows in this product.

The features of the SecuritySentivist include both standardIPS protection and the ability tolearn the network and its requiredprotection over time. Admins canalso create custom signatures toprotect specific or complicatednetwork structures from intrusion.

This product was above averageto use with little trouble duringinstallation and configuration.During installation, we had a fewconfiguration problems with theJava interface, but were able towork past these errors and getback on track.

The Sentivist also has a networkconfiguration wizard that is easyto use and information is askedfor in a very straightforward way. After setup, the device monitorsall traffic and displays many easilyread charts, graphs, and reports.

The product performed verywell under all our testing parameters. It logged and preventedall attacks we threw at it and wewere able to see all activity in thereal-time logs and no extra stresswas put on the network.

Documentation was very easy tounderstand and straightforward.During configuration, when thecursor is moved over a field, asmall popup message is displayedthat describes the informationneeded. Both the paper documentationand message popups worktogether to make setup andconfiguration quick and easy.

The popups do not substitutefor the lack of online manuals, however. NFR tells us the supportsite offers PDF documents, though we did not have access tothis during our testing.

NFR has many support servicesat the disposal of the administrator.Phone support is offered duringnormal business hours, butNFR also provides many ways ofgetting support online after hours. There is also e-mail support andtraining classes that administratorscan attend to find ways to use theproduct more effectively.

The system is moderately pricedfor a full IPS system. It is a goodinvestment for just about any sizeof company or network, exceptthe smallest ones, although forvery large networks it can becomea bit pricey.
