Symantec PGP Whole Disk Encryption features all the great functions of PGP Whole Disk Encryption - just now with a new name. With this product, users not only can encrypt a whole disk, but also can take advantage of many other features, such as PGP Virtual Disk, which creates a virtual encrypted volume; PGP Zip, which allows for creation of self-decrypting Zip packages; and preboot authentication, which allows users to assign a password to the machine at boot, which ensures greater security.
The installation is quite straightforward, started by launching the installer on the machine and running through an installation wizard. After the installation wizard is complete, all management is done through the installed application. We found management to be easy and intuitive via the well-organized management application.
This tool can also be deployed throughout the enterprise using the PGP Universal Server, which allows for full policy and Active Directory synchronization. This solution also can be deployed across different platforms, including Windows, Linux and Mac OS, which provides for a great amount of deployment flexibility.
Documentation includes a quick-start guide, as well as a user guide in PDF format. Both guides include many screen shots and step-by-step configuration instructions in an easy-to-follow format.
Symantec offers several levels of support with various options. Customers get bronze support for the first year included in the purchase of the product. This includes web-based support and access to a user forum. Other options include phone and email support, account managers and classroom training.
At a price of $119 per user, we find this product to be a great value for the money. Symantec PGP Whole Disk Encryption offers many features - above just whole disk encryption - that are easy to use and understand.
