Just a few days before his Helsinki summit with President Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin called for an international collaborative effort and a set of standards to fight cyber threats.

”Cyberthreats have reached such a scale that they could only be neutralized by combined efforts of the entire international community," Putin said at a cybersecurity conference in Moscow, according to an ABC News report. “We have repeatedly seen that some nations' egoism, their attempts to act squarely to their own advantages, hurt the global information stability.”

Putin has been widely criticized for Russia's leveraging of social media platforms and using cyberattacks to orchestrate influence campaigns and disrupt democratic processes in the U.S. and abroad.

Trump meets with the Russian president July 16 and has pledged to broach the subject of Russia's meddling in the U.S. presidential election.
