Report: Russia copies China’s espionage “play book”

Researchers have revealed that Russia is behind hundreds cyber espionage campaigns targeting American, European and Asian companies.

According to Reuters, security firm CrowdStrike recently released a report that shares how intellectual property was stolen as a result of targeted attacks aimed at companies in the energy and technology sectors, among others.

After following the actions of a group of Russian hackers they dubbed “Energetic Bear,” CrowdStrike researchers believe it is a government sponsored group and that the campaigns are intended to gather data that would benefit the country's economic gains.

According to Dmitri Alperovitch, chief technology officer at CrowdStrike, this marks the first time the Russian government is tied to cyber espionage intrusions on foreign companies. “They are copying the Chinese play book,” he told Reuters.
