Researchers in China work on facial recognition payment app

Researchers with the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) are reportedly working to launch a mobile payment app that makes use of facial recognition technology to authenticate users.

A Sunday report by Science and Technology Daily revealed that Carnegie Mellon University had already measured the payment system's accuracy rate, which reached 99.8 percent.  The app is expected to be launched in 2015 and makes use of CAS' database of faces, which is compromised of more than 50 million records, the outlet said.

Back in February, a group of technology experts met to discuss facial recognition technologies and take the first steps toward establishing guidelines for future technology. The Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration hosted the event and invited a group of privacy advocates, technical experts and industry professionals to the gathering.
