Understanding and knowing your data is the foundation for information protection. Defining your data — is the first part of a three-part framework called the Data Security And Control Framework that Forrester created to help Security & Risk (S&R) professionals adapt to the new data economy. Data discovery and classification are two essential, yet often overlooked, initiatives that lay the foundation for protecting data.

Defining data via data discovery and classification is a critical, component of data security and control. Security and risk pros can't expect to adequately protect data if they don't have knowledge about what data exists, where it resides, its value to the organization, and who can use it. Data classification helps to create data identity (data-ID), the missing link for creating actionable data security and control policies.
So can you identify your sensitive data? Identifying the sensitive information within your organization is a critical step in an information protection strategy: If you don't know what you have, where it is, and why you have it, you can't expect to apply the appropriate policies and controls to protect it.

Join John Kindervag, Vice President and Principle Analyst at Forrester and Tim Upton, CEO at TITUS, for our upcoming webinar where we will discuss:

  • Data classification: A strategy to define your data
