eTrust Secure Content Manager

This product offers content-management for email and the web. It has anti-spam filtering, confidentiality controls, http and ftp scanning, URL blocking for web security, and it includes eTrust Antivirus.

Content filtering uses third-party realtime blackhole lists (RBLs); separate enterprise and user whitelists; enterprise blacklists; keyword lists for headers, bodies, and attachments; and blocking of attachments by file name, type and size.

Compressed archive attachments are extracted so that the files inside can be examined.

Multiple third-party RBLs can be used in a flexible way to minimize false positives and negatives. For example, a weight can be assigned to each RBL depending on how reliable you think it is, and you can require a certain threshold of weight to be reached before an email is regarded as spam.

Keyword searching is used to identify outgoing emails that may contain inappropriate information according to company policies.

Dangerous scripts, including Java and ActiveX, are blocked in email (SMTP) and web (http) traffic. Large emails can be ?parked? and released later to relieve network load. Blocked traffic is quarantined and users are notified about each quarantined message.

There is a central Quarantine Manager interface that enables the administrator to deal quickly with quarantined emails (the reason for quarantine is indicated) and the system can be configured so virus-infected emails are cleaned, rather than blocked. Comprehensive reports can be generated to help analyze threats.

Users can customize their own rules for defining spam. Anti-virus signatures, URL categories, and lexical lists for spam and profanity are kept updated via a scheduled download from the Computer Associates website. SCM runs on a Windows 2000 Server or 2003 Server gateway machine that does not have to be dedicated.
