Promisec Endpoint Manager

Promisec Endpoint Manager offers full agentless management and auditing of the many client computers on the enterprise network. This product allows administrators to get a look at systems running Windows, Linux and Mac OSX to ensure that they are staying compliant with the security policy. Parameters that can be monitored include ensuring that anti-virus and endpoint protection products are up to date and working properly, that all systems and applications are at appropriate patch levels, that users are adhering to company usage policy and guidelines, and that endpoints are not running any unauthorized processes or services.

We found this product to be quite easy to install in our test environment. Installation was run from an executable installer package which launched a short setup wizard. At the completion of the wizard all product components were installed and we were able to get started with initial configuration. While we found this product to be easy to use overall, the initial configuration did take some experimentation to get things going. When first launched, the application opens up a "launch pad," which has a few different options to select. It took us a little bit of time to get comfortable launching into the various areas of the product, but once we spent some time clicking around we gained a measure of comfort.

Overall, Promisec Endpoint Manager is loaded with features for auditing and reporting. This product includes a number of configurable options and granular controls which allowed us to set up specific configuration templates to deploy across our test network. We found policy options to be well-organized and categorized for easy management. Aside from the policy options, this tool also features excellent automation and remediation capabilities which, based on the needs of the enterprise, can be customized easily.

Documentation included installation and user guides, both in PDF format. The installation guide provided an excellent amount of detail on installing the product and getting an initial configuration in place. The user guide provided a much more in-depth look at advanced configuration and use of the features. Both guides offered easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions, configuration examples and screen shots in an organized and easy-to-read format.

Promisec offers 24/7 phone-, email- and chat-based technical support as part of the subscription cost. However, that is the extent of the support options offered. Promisec does not offer any user self-service aid, such as an online knowledge base or user forum. While phone, email and chat support are great ways of solving a problem, we also like to see user self-service options as well.

At a price starting at $20 per endpoint per year, we found this product to be an average value for the money. While Promisec Endpoint Manager offers excellent endpoint management policy options, the overall cost of ownership can be quite high in most environments. Aside from the support cost, we do not see a reason for a subscription-based model in this product category, especially at a per endpoint cost. This combined with the lackluster online support options brings the overall value of this product down quite a bit.
