Establishing secure access and identity management policies is important for organizations of all sizes, but when you're a $41.3 billion (USD) global insurance and financial services company, the stakes don't get much higher.

Nevertheless, Sheri Munro, director of access governance and global information risk management at Toronto-based Manulife Financial Corporation, seems to be handling her responsibilities in stride. Since ascending to her current position in February 2015, she has taken charge of the company's enterprise-wide identity management solution and all associated business processes that dictate access to critical applications necessary for Sarbanes-Oxley regulatory compliance.

Likewise, she also oversees management of Manulife's privileged access management solutions and related business processes, while spearheading the company's overall global access governance strategy.

Munro has been with Manulife for nearly a decade, holding a variety of leadership roles focused on security initiatives. She previously served as IT director, during which time she helped set organizational standards for new operational processes and methodologies. And before that, she was director of data network services, providing architecture, leadership and design solutions for all Canadian network-related projects as she developed and maintained a three-to-five year plan.

Munro's Women in Security nomination praises her “articulate attention to detail,” and notes that throughout her stint with Manulife's Global Infrastructure Services unit, “she assisted with her clients' business objectives, functions and organizational impact with the understanding that strong working relationships are always necessary to accomplish these goals.”

A graduate of the University of Waterloo who enjoys traveling and curling in her spare time, Munro has previously held IT positions at Bell ICT, where she was director of data network services, and The Economical Insurance Group, which employed her as technical manager.
