StealthGenie spyware goes kaput following court ruling

A U.S. district court judge has completely shut down the advertising, marketing and sales tied to the StealthGenie spyware application.

While a temporary restraining order was put on the app's operation in September, on Tuesday the court decided to shutter it altogether, according to an FBI release.

The spyware has the ability to secretly monitor calls, texts and videos on mobile phones within a 15-foot radius of the device. Additionally, those who purchased the app and had physical contact with a targeted device had the ability to sync them up with a computer to review phone data.

On Nov. 25, Hammad Akbar, 31, CEO of InvoCode Pvt. Limited and Cubitium Limited, the companies that advertised and sold StealthGenie, pleaded guilty in a Virginia court to selling the spyware. He was ordered to pay a fine of $500,000.
