Sunbelt Network Security Inspector
Ease of use, presentation.
An intuitive and capable basic vulnerability scanner.
SummaryThis is a vulnerability scanner for Microsoft operating systems and applications. It provides a vulnerability database (with automatic updates) and a set of standard presentations and reports, which enable the user to quickly be able to perform vulnerability scans.
Installation is straightforward and the initial presentation is intuitive enough that even users with little or no experience of such tools will be able to perform useful audits against their network and clients.
Documentation is provided in electronic PDF format, and offers comprehensive coverage of the software. A white paper introduces vulnerability scanning.
This is an affordable, easy-to-use tool that is ideal for small networks or workstations where operational reliability and security are important. It can be operated by anyone with basic IT knowledge, making it especially suitable for Microsoft-based SMEs where the network administrator may have additional responsibilities.
Even though it is easy to configure and use, the Sunbelt Network Security Inspector offers good functionality with a database containing over 2,500 known vulnerabilities, a logical range of standard reports and practical advice on how to fix any problems it uncovers.
Having performed a scan, one can peruse the list of found items and double-click on anything dubious to bring up a dialog containing a full explanation of the vulnerability found and advice on how to fix it.
This no-nonsense functionality will appeal to busy users who want to use some sort of vulnerability scanner but do not want to spend much time tampering with it.
The reports are clear and well-presented, including management summary reports that can be quickly printed for meetings etc.
Overall, we liked this product. It is not a heavyweight tool that will analyze every molecule of your infrastructure and activity like some more expensive offerings, but in terms of quickly finding common vulnerabilities within a typical Microsoft environment, it does a pretty good job and is a joy to use.
