What type of information? Names, birthdates, social security numbers/state ID numbers, email addresses and zip codes from SunGard students K-12 who attended school in the district during the 2013-2014 school year.
What happened? Officials said a third-party vendor notified them that data may have been exposed due to a software installation that sent the data to other school districts without the Katy ISD's knowledge or authorization. The data was immediately removed from the installation package once the error was realized by the company.
What was the response? While there was no evidence that the data was seen by personnel from any other district, Officials said the breach does not impact all current students, but the information was included on the database affected. The affected school district will offer one year of LifeLock services to the students who may have been impacted by the breach.
Quote: “Information security is a top priority for Katy ISD, and the District will continue to monitor this incident and SunGard K-12 to ensure that the company adheres to taking all steps necessary to resolve and prevent this isolated incident from occurring again,” officials said in Monday statement.
