Breach, Data Security

UPMC sued after compromise of 27,000 employees’ information

An attorney, others from his law practice and another Pittsburgh-based law firm are suing the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) following the compromise of at least 27,000 workers' personal and financial information.

Attorney Benjamin Sweet filed suit against UPMC and its human resources software provider, Ultimate Software Group, on Friday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Additionally, Sweet is seeking class-action status to include current and former hospital employees.

The lawsuit claims the hospital and its software provider violated federal guidelines and failed to meet data security standards. Ultimate Software's Executive Vice President Mitchell Dauerman says his firm doesn't provide any services to UPMC and was wrongly implicated.

At least 788 employees have been tax fraud victims since the breach, and one of those vicitims, Alice Patrick, would serve as the lead plaintiff in the lawsuit. No patient information was affected.
