Watch and learn: Tackling cybersecurity education for state and local governments

The Cybersecurity Collaborative recently hosted the second webinar in a series with the National Association of Counties on cybersecurity best practices for state and local governments.

Focusing on end-user education, the second “NACo Cybersecurity Best Practices Webinar Series" on Sept. 16 offered end-user awareness and education programs on areas such as phishing and training.

It doesn’t matter how mature an organization’s cybersecurity program is, education is critical, said Lisa Plaggemier, interim executive director of the National Cyber Security Alliance.

“The most important thing is to just get started,” Plaggemier said. “Even if you’re still figuring out policies or other foundational things about your security program … not doing anything is the worst possible thing that you can do.”

NACo has identified 11 best practices for state and local governments to address cyberattacks. The priorities identified by NACo will serve many different industries, not just state and local governments, said Rita Reynolds, NACo’s chief information officer.

Participating in the briefing were:

• Mattie Gullixon, program director, National Cybersecurity Center

• Lisa Plaggemier, interim executive director, National Cyber Security Alliance

• Parham Eftekhari, executive director, Cybersecurity Collaborative
