Wells Fargo bank website hit by DDoS attack

Wells Fargo's online banking website suffered an alleged cyber attack Tuesday, temporarily limiting service for its customers.

A bank spokesperson told NBC News that the suspected cause of the disruption was a distributed denial-of-service attack. However, it was added, the effect on service was “usually intermittent,” and customers were advised to retry using the site shortly after the event.

This attack is yet another to add to a list of recent cyber assaults on major U.S. banking institutions, including Bank of America, Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase.

Many debate whether the attacks are performed by a hacktivist group, calling itself Martyr Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Cyber Fighters, or by Iran.
