Goodwill investigates compromise of credit, debit card info

Those bargain finds might not look so good now to shoppers if their credit or debit card information was compromised at one of several Goodwill stores across the country.

In a statement on its website, Goodwill Industries International said it was notified last week by federal authorities and what it calls “a payment card industry fraud investigative unit” that credit card data may have been stolen from some of its U.S. stores. An investigation is ongoing but has not yet confirmed a breach.

Underscoring that “Goodwills across the country take the data of consumers seriously and their community well-being is our number one concern,” the organization said it was working with the industry and federal authorities, as well as pledging to “work proactively” with individual stores “if a data compromise is uncovered.”

Retailers lately have been particularly susceptible to breaches.
