Skimming at Virginia ATMs, more than 3,000 Union debit cards compromised

Virginia-based Union First Market Bank announced that a number of ATMs in the Richmond area fell victim to skimming, and certain activity has been restricted for more than 3,000 of its debit cards that were affected.

How many victims? More than 3,000 debit cards.

What type of personal information? Debit card, ATM and PIN based information.

What happened? ATMs in the Richmond area fell victim to skimming and Union debit cards were affected.

What was the response? Union restricted ATM and PIN-based activity on affected debit cards, but signature-based transactions are still available. Union is notifying all impacted customers, and is working to replace cards as fast as possible.

Details: Some Union customers have experienced fraudulent activity. Union has checked all of its ATMs and everything is clear. The belief is that Union was not specifically targeted, and that other banks and ATMs were possibly impacted.

Quote: “To ensure that unauthorized activity was stopped as soon as possible, we restricted access to an intentionally broad audience until we could further analyze our information, in conjunction with both internal and external security professionals,” according to a notification posted to the Union website.”
