St. Vincent Breast Center mails 63K letters to wrong people

A clerical error resulted in Indianapolis-based St. Vincent Breast Center mailing more than 63,000 letters containing personal information to the wrong people.

How many victims? 63,325 letters were sent to the wrong patients. 

What type of personal information? Names, addresses and a reference to a scheduled appointment.

What happened? St. Vincent Breast Center mailed letters containing personal information to the wrong people.

What was the response? Returned letters are being destroyed and St. Vincent Breast Center is changing its patient mailing processes internally and with external vendors.

Details: The letters were sent on May 5 and St. Vincent Breast Center began hearing of the error around May 15. The letters were being sent to prior patients of Indianapolis Breast Center P.C. and Solis Women's Health Breast Imaging Specialists of Indiana P.C. – both of which closed last year and entered into an agreement with St. Vincent Breast Center – notifying them that St. Vincent Breast Center is available to provide services.

Quote: “There is no evidence to believe that the information has been or will be accessed or used for fraudulent purposes,” according to the notification.
