Obama nominates next Homeland Security head

October 18, 2013

President Obama has officially nominated Jeh Johnson, a former general counsel for the Department of Defense (DOD), to serve as the country's top homeland security official.

On Friday, Obama selected Johnson as his choice to replace Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, who announced her resignation in July.

Among his most noted work, Johnson was integral in ending the military's controversial “Don't Ask, Don't Tell” policy and relocating Chelsea Manning, formerly known as Bradley Manning, from a military jail where he faced excessively harsh conditions while awaiting trial for his role in the WikiLeaks disclosure.
