iOS users reporting iPhones, iPads being locked up and held for ransom

Reports of iPhones and iPads being digitally locked up and held for up to a $100 ransom have been coming in from Apple users in Australia, as well as in other parts of the world.

Several impacted users have taken to Twitter and other forums to report randomly receiving a variant of this message: “Hacked by Oleg Pliss. For unlock device YOU NEED send voucher code by 100 $/eur one of this(Moneypack/Ukash/PaySafeCard)to [email protected] I sent code 2618911226.”

The attack could have something to do with Apple's Find My iPhone feature, according to a Tuesday Time report, which explains that the miscreants might have acquired iCloud usernames and passwords, remotely locked up iPhones and iPads, and demanded a ransom in a message delivered to the phone.

Apple has yet to respond to the incident, according to the Time report.

UPDATE: In a statement, Apple said iCloud was not compromised and that users should change their Apple ID passwords, according to reports.
