McAfee: Malware breaking records, again

Security firm McAfee said it's amassed 1.5 million more malware samples in the second quarter of this year compared to the first quarter. By next quarter, the company expects the number of new malware samples to reach 100 million for the year. According to the latest "McAfee Threats Report," released Tuesday, most types of malware have increased from last quarter. One bright spot is the continued drop of rogue anti-virus programs, which claim a victim's computer is infected so attackers can trick the target into paying money for a bogus solution. But that's largely been replaced by ransomware, in which malware essentially prevents victims from using their computer until a blackmail is paid. The report also noted a continued steady rise of mobile malware, almost entirely written for the Android operating system.
