Scammers use Verizon tech support number to lure users to scam website

A spoofing scam that tricks Verizon Wireless customers into divulging personal information by displaying a real Verizon Wireless tech support number on a phone's call ID, has been circulating for the last couple of weeks, according to Droid-Life.com.

The company behind the scam uses the phone number, (800) 922-0204, a legitimate Verizon Technical Support number as a mask, dialing users and directing them to a third-party scam site, www.verizon54.com, with the promise that they will receive a $54 special reward. The call ends with a cheery “because at Verizon, we care about you.” Once at the site, users are asked for personal information, which scammers could eventually use to access their Verizon Wireless account and cause all sorts of damage.

Bloggers began warning of the scam recently and Google Chrome has also identified the scam site as a phishing web site and blocked access to it.
