Google launches Unattended Project Reminder for preview

August 9, 2021
The new Unattended Project Reminder is now available for public preview under Google Cloud's Active Assist service, ZDNet reports. The new feature, which was in development through 2021, helps notify users about old cloud computing projects that are no longer being worked on, which pose security risks. Deleting these projects also free up cloud computing resources and help reduce cloud bills, as well as minimize the possibility of cloud misconfigurations that threat actors could exploit. "These security risks tend to grow over time because the latest best practices and patches are usually not applied to unattended projects," according to Google. Google Cloud stated that the project had been under consideration for some time, but the units that worked on implementing it ran into the issue of distinguishing between cloud projects that are actually unattended and those with an intentionally low activity level using signals such as network, API and user activity. The company then collaborated with users to analyze real-life unattended projects and came up with a system that detects key signals that also include billing activity and cloud services usage. Project owners can choose to receive recommendations through chat messages or email.
