A Veritas Technologies report showed that among the 56% of office workers that reported accidentally deleting cloud-hosted files, 35% have admitted lying to cover up the accidental deletion, and employees had an even higher likelihood of lying or not mentioning incidents where they may have been involved in the entry of ransomware in their companies' networks, according to TechRepublic.
Moreover, 92% have been found to have a false belief that their mistakes could be easily corrected by cloud providers. Fear of shame and false confidence among employees should prompt companies to remove the culture of blame that surrounds cybersecurity incident reporting, according to the report.
"There's often a short window where businesses can act to minimize the impact of deleting or corrupting the cloud-based data office workers use. Leaders need to motivate employees to come forward as soon as possible so IT teams can act fast to take remedial action. It's clear from this research that shaming and punishment are not ideal ways to do that," said Veritas General Manager of Software-as-a-Service Protection Simon Jelly.
