FTC warns Facebook on changing WhatsApp privacy policies

The Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) bureau director issued a warning letter to Facebook about its WhatsApp acquisition and possible privacy implications last week.

WhatsApp doesn't collect location data, message contents, or names, emails, and addresses from users' contacts. Additionally, WhatsApp explicitly stated that it doesn't sell or share personal information with third-party companies without consent.

Both Facebook and WhatsApp publicly stated that the messaging service's privacy policy wouldn't be affected by the acquisition.

However, the FTC confirmed that if Facebook decides to change WhatsApp's policies, it would have to receive users' consent, as well as not misrepresent any of the ways in which data plans would be securely maintained.

Users would also have to be reminded that they can stop using the messaging service if they do not agree with changes.
