Three suspects were arrested after a network of Eastern European and Russian cybercriminals used malware to steal $2.5 million in cash from dozens of machines around the country.
Authorities arrested three foreign suspects in connection with the heist, one of which was a Latvian man who was held in northeast Taiwan, and two other were suspects who were arrested in the capital Taipei, according to the BBC.
Another 13 suspects are believed to have fled the country although authorities managed to recover more than half of the money, the BBC said.
It is unclear still unclear how the thieves installed the malware on the machines but investigators believe mobile phones were used.
“This is the first time that an international team of ATM thieves has committed a crime in Taiwan," the head of the police's Criminal Investigation Division, Lee Wen-chang told the network.
