Blackberry patch fixes QuadRooter vulnerability

Blackberry announced it will be pushing out a patch today that will make users of its PRIV and DTEK50 smartphone safe from QuadRooter, a vulnerability potentially impacting the 900 million devices in use powered by a Qualcomm processor.

In a blog post Alex Manea, director of BlackBerry Security, said the fix will immediately go out to those who purchased their smartphone through shopblackberry.com and to those who bought it through a retail outlet later this week. The patch is part of Blackberry's commitment to rolling out security updates as quickly as possible, Manea said.

Samsung already released an update for its S6 Edge to fix the issue as did Android with its August Marshmallow patch.

QuadRooter is a set of four vulnerabilities affecting Qualcomm processors that can be exploited through the use of a malicious app and provide escalated privileges. It was discovered by Check Point and revealed to the public during Black Hat 2016.
