Just-patched critical Microsoft bug under attack

Researchers warned Thursday that a recently patched vulnerability in Windows Media is being used by remote attackers to launch malware. Roland Dela Paz, a threat response engineer at Trend Micro, said in a blog post that researchers spotted malicious HTML being hosted that exploits the vulnerability and executes a trojan that includes rootkit functionality. "We'd like to reiterate that this is a publicly disclosed exploit," Dela Paz said. "As such, we can expect similar attacks in the future." The "critical" flaw, which affects Windows Server 2003, XP, Vista, and Server 2008, was patched earlier this month as part of Microsoft's regularly scheduled security update.
