Russian President Vladimir Putin's key adviser on internet-related affairs was accused of being the owner of a locally operated torrent site.
Herman Klimenko was appointed to the position last week and has since criticized web blocking, even suggesting that copyright holders wait for the country's economic situation to improve before “terrorizing” citizens over piracy, according to a TorrentFreak blog.
Not long after, sources informed the Russian publication Vedomosti that Klimenko is the owner of a company that operates Torrnado.ru, the blog said.
Klimenko reportedly commented on Facebook that torrents on their own weren't illegal and later said he would push for a Chinese-style internet in Russia.
Under Russian law Klimenko can't hold assets so some will be given to his son and others sold, according to Russian publication Izvestia. The fate of Torrnado.ru is unclear.
