Twitter plans to encrypt its direct messaging service

As a result of the growing NSA revelations, social micro-blogging site Twitter is planning to encrypt its direct messaging service in order to bolster the privacy of its users.

This week the Washington Post published new leaks disclosed by whistleblower Edward Snowden, which detailed how the NSA secretly tapped Yahoo and Google's data centers. According to a recent report in the New York Times, Twitter is also working on a variety of “new security measures” and is among other prominent tech giants looking to increase its defenses following the leaks.

Last month, Twitter introduced a big change to the site by allowing all users to direct message anyone on the service instead of limiting it only to individuals who follow one another.
