New Jersey teen charged after altering students’ grades and attendance records

A 16-year-old New Jersey teen is being charged with unlawfully accessing his school district's computer system and using it to change students' grades and attendance records.

Orange Public School district staff and authorities believe the student accessed the computer system through a teacher's login credentials, according to NJ.com. At this time, however, they aren't sure of how he obtained access to the teacher's password.

The sophomore faces multiple counts of second-degree computer theft for unlawfully accessing and altering data and one count of hindering apprehension.

At least 30 students were suspended after the grade and attendance record changes were noticed, and more students could be formally charged and arrested.

The case may be handled in Family Court.
